The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is a landmark regulation under the European Green Deal, designed to make physical goods placed on the EU market more environmentally friendly, circular, and energy efficient throughout their entire lifecycle.

Although formally adopted in 2024, the regulation is being implemented in phases. Key elements include the introduction of Digital Product Passports (DPPs) and measures to restrict hazardous substances that hinder the circularity of products and materials.

A significant milestone took effect on 19 July, when Article 25 of the ESPR comes into force, prohibiting the destruction of unsold consumer products listed in Annex VII, including apparel, clothing accessories and footwear.
